16 Feb 2017 by Kate Wenig

Saturday 4th February at the Foster Secondary College was the first session for 2017. Numbers are strong this season, with lots of U7 – U9 athletes competing and learning new skills. The athletes participate in the “Club Event” which is usually a middle distance event from 800m – 1500m.

On Saturday the team officials were very impressed with all of the younger athletes competing in good times in the heat. Their fitness and determination has improved since the start of the season.

Young athletes like Owen Gornall, Josh Bradbury and Cody Best clearly excelled. Lear Dyson and Archer Gee were also terrific throughout the day. They all recorded great results across all events. Rachel Denbrok, Lewis Armstrong, Tom Lleyton, Lily Gornall and Caitlyn Jones continued to improve their best times in running jumping and throwing events.

The older athletes had a good day also, with Christine Denbrok, Max Dormans, Lucas Jones and Elsa Gallagher achieving PBs, or very close to them.

Yasmin Duursma broke a long standing High Jump record in the Girls under 13. The previous record was held by Emily Allott who jumped 1.35m in the 2003/04 season. Yasmin successfully jumped over 1.40m.

The encouragement awards from the weekend went to – Jumping: Caitlyn Jones, Throwing: Archer Gee and Running: Josh Bradbury.
