Corner Inlet Excel at Gippsland Regionals

4 Mar 2017 by Kate Wenig

Corner Inlet would be one of the smallest clubs that were represented at the Gippsland Regional Track and Field Championships held two weekends ago at Edwin Flack Reserve in Berwick. Our 5 athletes competed in cool conditions on Saturday and then torrential rain on Sunday. What was pleasing to see was that all our athletes did a PB (Personal Best) in at least one of their events, if not all. What a fantastic effort by our representatives.

Thank you to the parents who assisted us in official roles for Corner Inlet. We, and Gippsland athletes appreciated your time. We had two club recordsbroken over the weekend too. Willem Duursma – club record for 800m U10 Boys with a time of 2.38.88 (previously held by N Park 3.39.90) and Yasmin Duursma – club record for 800m U13 Girls with a time of 2.42.87 (Previously held by L. Boag 1994/1995 3.05.97).

Our results for the weekend were –
Lucas Jones – 200m – 8th, 400m – 4th, 800m – 5th.
Willem Duursma – 800m – 1st, 400m – 2nd, High Jump – 3rd, 70m – 3rd
Thomas Wenig – 60m Hurdles – 1st, 200m – 7th Final
Zane Duursma – 400m – 6th Final, High Jump – 8th
Yasmin Duursma – 800m – 3rd, 400m – 7th Final, Discus – 3rd, High Jump – 4th

We also had our second last session for the season on Saturday and our encouragement awards were:
Running – Dylan Cowell for completing the 800m event at such a young age (he ran all the way at such a fast pace).
Throwing – Lear Dyson demonstrated amazing discus technique(and thoroughly enjoyed himself after every throw)
Jumping – Ryan Jorgenson has improved his high jump technique and is listening very intently to the coach.

Next Saturday 4th March is our last session for the season. We will have a session with athletes and parents, and end of season presentation, AGM and finish off with family BBQ. We wish our state qualifiers (Willem, Yasmin and Thomas) all the best on March 11th and 12th as they compete with the best athletes in the state at Lakeside Stadium at Albert Park.
